MORE than 100 parcels have been stolen from an Australia Post depot.
It’s believed two young people forced open a hatch at the Braeside depot to get access to the stored packages.
Victoria Police spokeswoman Amelia Penhall said they were searching for two suspects — believed to be a man and woman aged in their late teens to early 20s.
“It is believed two unknown offenders attended a post office on Venture Way between 5.45pm Monday, July 11, and 5.15am Tuesday, July 12, and have stolen about 100 parcels,” Ms Penhall said.(See footnote 01)
A foyer in the main building had been left open for customers to access their PO boxes, and it’s thought the pair wedged open a mail delivery hatch on the front door to get further into the building.
Due to the online shopping boom in recent years, the 100-plus parcels would have contained anything from clothes and jewellery to electronics. (or shit loads of drugs. See footnote 02)
One affected consumer, who asked not to be named, said she worked full time and relied heavily on the parcel service, but wouldn’t trust using it in the future. (See footnote 03)
The distressed customer said she wasn’t notified of the theft by Australia Post, event though the company has customer email addresses and phone numbers, and only found out when she went to collect a parcel from the 24/7 lockers at the depot.(See footnote 04)
“I immediately rang their 1800 number to have a disinterested employee tell me it was noted and they would follow up tomorrow,” she said.
“Auspost have been unhelpful so far in responding and their response to a request for compensation for a lost package is to ‘lodge a complaint online, we will get back to you’.” (See footnote 05)
Australia Post told Leader the integrity of the mail was their business’ “highest priority”. (See footnote 06)
“Australia Post takes great pride in the safe, secure and efficient delivery of mail,” spokesman Jared Lynch said.
“Incidents of mail theft are rare and our Corporate Security and Investigations Group work closely with police on investigations.” (see foot note 07)
He said there were a number of security measures in place at Australia Post facilities, including CCTV, regular monitoring and screening. (see foot note 08)
“If customers have any concerns about their mail we encourage them to call us on 13 13 18,” he said.

Drugs, explosives in mail can't be detected, Australia Post says
Australia Post says it lacks the legal authority and technology to detect illegal goods in the mail.
The extraordinary admission was made in a letter written in response to a Freedom of Information (FOI) request lodged by ABC News.
The request sought details of any investigations into illegal drugs being sent through the post.
"Australia Post has an obligation to inform relevant authorities should it suspect the presence of illegal goods in mail items, but lacks the technology or equipment to detect [such goods]," the letter said.
"Australia Post does not have, for example, sniffer dogs, X-ray machines or explosive trace detectors.
"Australia Post lacks legal authority to open mail."
The online market for illegal drugs largely relies on postal services like Australia Post to deliver purchases.
In a statement to the ABC, Australia Post said funding was not the reason behind the lack of technology to detect illegal goods and that it was not in a position to change any laws.
"Australia Post does not seek this legal authority which, in Australia Post's view, properly sits with law enforcement agencies," the statement said.

The customer is then going to have to provide receipts and to ask the sender to supply proof of postage, and while Australia Post claims it takes 10 days to investigate the issue, it usually either never investigate anything, or they take months of giving people the run around, and if the lying arseholes, determine that compensation is due, it will probably be only for the cost of the postage, and not the contents...
